What is my Desktop Serial Number and why do you need it ?

QUESTION:

How do I get my Desktop Serial Number, what is it and why do you need it...?

ANSWER:

Desktop Serial Numbers (DSN) are generated from unique system and manufacturer's data embedded in some of the hardware installed on your computer. This data is encrypted into an array of 18 upper and lower case alphabetic characters which is a unique identifier of that particular computer. No two computers will give exactly the same DSN.

We use your DSN in our commercial software for no other reason than to ensure that our licence files can only be used on the computer for which they were generated. They do not gather or contain any information at all about the setup of your computer or anything about any other software or system information.

As our online activation system is fully automatic, you only need to see/use your DSN if you want to activate manually by phone/fax/email or when using the manual activation web form option.

You can obtain the DSN for your computer in any of our commercial software using the Activation Wizard and choosing the I prefer to activate manually... option in the introduction page. For more detailed guidance on this see the Manual Activation page.

If you are still unsure why we need this number and when you might need it, have a look at Desktop Licence page.

can go back to Version 5.2?

comment posted by thida :: 5 October 2006 - 12:16pm

Hello to Andrew, Caroline and Oliver,

It is long time not contacted as web site is closed for 9 months for new version.

First of all, I can’t find how to make a new post, so I shared others for my quires.

I’ve not upgraded yet my V5.2 to new version 5.5 which looks very good and I’m happy to learn some new things of it.
But I would like to check whether I can go back to V5.2 after upgraded to V5.5 or not???

The reason is I’ve not used to new version but it but I quickly installed trial V5.5 and run solar insolation of 4 facades by using my V5.2 simple box model with same weather file. I found out the results insolation values are different.
So I wonder I need to check all the analyses by using old and new versions of Ecotect to make sure everything is consistent for my old and new projects.

Two more things to inquire.

1) I’m thinking to buy Weather tool full version, and may I know within how many days I can straight away use it as I need to use psychometric analysis urgently.

2) Conversion separate values files to Wea file, global radiation is ignored and only Beam and Diffuse horizontal are used. So Ecotect weather is using Total incident solar radiation for all facades by adding Beam& Diffuse. May I know why Global is not using?
Then I’m confused when I compared 3 Solar insolation calculations i.e. 1) calculation by Grids, 2) by surface object attributes without grid 3) solar exposure calculation for each facades and 4) Excel spread sheet of hourly weather data.
I found out 2 and 3 is same but different from 1 and 4, Excel sheet in Direct and Total insolation. Actually all 4 should be the same if same façade is calculating.
I attached 2 eco models + weather + spread sheet what I’ve tested for you to check. I just analyzed horizontal plane (but I noticed vertical planes are also getting different results by using grid and non-grid calculation). I think Direct component is something wrong in those calculations but I don’t know which method is wrong.

Do me a favor and response me as it is very important for me to choose a correct method for accuracy.

Thank you very much.

Regards,
Thida

Activation Error Message

comment posted by jernava :: 8 November 2006 - 7:37pm

I treid to activate the Ecotect and Weather Tool softward using the Internet Activation Method and I kept getting an Activation Error Message. The Message states that the computer could not establish connection with activation server. I am able to connect to the Internet so I don't think the problem was coming from my computer.

One issue I consider was that I used a different computer to purchase and download the softwares (Ecotect and Weather Tool). I was also provided the activation details (emails address, proof of purchase numbers, and Password) so that I could Activate Via internet on a computer that I did not intend to install the softwares on. Could ther have been some desktop serial numbers that was sent initially from the first computer that is causing the problem?

I also sent a manual activation request but Share it was not able to help me.

Please advise.

Activation Error

Hello Jeremiah,

The issue should not be caused by your computer, as you should be able to install the licence on any computer now; In fact, during the connection to the squ1 server, the software does not yet check your licence status.

Instead, the issue could be either:

1. Your connection to the Internet is disable - but you say you are able to connect, so:
2. the squ1 server was busy during the time you tried to connect, in which case you may have to wait a bit and try later.

Once the server connects, you'll see the activation wizzard that will prompt you for the password etc...

Let meknow if you succeed.

Best,
Olivier

activation error

Olivier,

Upon further research, I found out that in order to connect to Squ1 activation server, there needs to be an open SSL connection on port 1520. I inquired with our IT guys if this port could be adjusted and I was told that port 1520 is being used as part of the firewall. At this point, it does not seem like I will be able to activate the softwares I purchased via internet. I have asked Squ1 for the manual activation and I am just waiting for a response with the necessary license file.

Thank you.

Thank you for your research Jeremiah,

This is good info. A few people have had trouble with the activation process; this is probably the culprit.

Thank you,

Manual Activation Request

I am working on a project and I need to start using Ecotect ASAP. My laptop, where I intend to install and use Ecotect, is unable to connect to the internet because of strict firewall settings that cannot be easily changed. I have requested Squ1 to email the license file to me, but I'm not really sure how long the process takes. I'm pretty certain that I can activate Ecotect on another computer that does not have the strict firewall settings while I wait to receive the license file for my laptop. I would like to confirm that if I was to activate the Ecotect on another computer via internet activation, that Squ1 will still e-mail me the license file I will need for my laptop. I will primarily be using the laptop to run the software, and because I cannot connect to the SQu1 activation server using this computer, I will definitely need the license file emailed to me. Will there be any problem doing this?

Please advise.

Transfer Licence

comment posted by Olivier :: 12 November 2006 - 9:52pm

Jeremiah,

You should be able to activate your software on any computer that has access to the squ1 server. Once that is done, only this particular computer will be able to use Ecotect in full mode.

If you want to use Ecotect on your laptop, you should first try to connect your laptop to a viable internet connection (no firewalls)to conect to squ1 server and go through the activation process via internet.

If you have installed Ecotect on another computer, you will be able to transfer that licence to another computer (such as your laptop) at any later time, but this means your laptop will still have to be able to connect to the squ1 server, so you might as well activate the software on your laptop in the first place.

Squ1 will only issue you the number of licence you paid for. If you have paid for one licence, you can only use one licence at a time - but can transfer the licence from computer to computer, granted you have access to the squ1 server.
I think if you cannot get you laptop connected to the squ1 server, and you want it mailed to you, you will have to be sure you are not using that single licence on another machine; if so, squ1 will see it is already in use and cannot sent you another one. If that is the case, you can still transfer the licence back to the squ1 server first, and wait for them to email it back to you.

Does that make sense?

Olivier,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer some of my questions. I am finally able to log on to the Squ1 Activation Server with my laptop and will no longer need the .lic file emailed to me.

Thank you for your help.

License transfer

comment posted by jernava :: 2 December 2006 - 5:32pm

I encountered a problem transferring the licenses for Ecotect and Weather Tool back to the SQU1 server. An error message stating "Your computer's serial number does not match any of those registered with Square One. You can only transfer a license from the actual computer that is using it". The problem is I need to transfer the licenses back to the SQU1 server so that I can then download the it to my desktop computer which is a little bit more powerful than my laptop.
My original install and activation of the software was done on my desktop computer and when I originally transferred the license to my laptop I had no problem, but now I'm continuing to receive the error messages.

Please help.
Jeremiah
