Missing file glu32.dll

QUESTION:

I cannot open ECOTECT due to a missing file glu32.dll. After I got the message, I reinstalled ECOTECT but the result was the same. I am running Windows ME on my computer.

ANSWER:

The glu32.dll file contains OpenGL utilities and is usually provided by the manufacturer of your graphics card in order to optimise it for their hardware. The reason ECOTECT displays its OpenGL render in a popup window is to avoid this issue as some machines used in offices and university computer labs do not have OpenGL compatible cards. Thus, we made sure that the OpenGL routines are not initialised or invoked until the user specifically chooses to open this window, allowing all the other functions to still run fine without OpenGL support.

Now, without getting too technical, Windows knows that the ECOTECT executable contains a link to OpenGL resources - even if they are not used when it starts. However, all versions of Windows post Win98 come with software support for OpenGL and should already have the required dlls in the System32 directory - even if they don't work with the graphics card being used. For some reason yours doesn't, so Windows avoids a possible problem by not letting you run the program.

The best thing we can suggest is to try updating the graphics drivers for your computer. This will require a visit to your card manufacturer's web site. In doing this, hopefully the appropriate DLL and graphics libraries will be provided.

We do know of other errors that are caused by Windows ME (mainly due to lack of resources provided by the operating system) but have not heard of this one that you mention (glu32.dll), until now of course.
