EInvalidOp error when loading software

QUESTION:

When trying to start ECOTECT I get an error: EInvalidOp ECOTECT then doesn't finish loading and I can't get anywhere with the software.

What is going wrong and how can I fix this issue ?

ANSWER:

It seems this error is caused by a corrupt ECOTECT registry entry on the computer.

This appears to only happen on Windows XP or 2000 operating systems with a recent (Jan '05) service pack update. If ECOTECT has an error and closes unexpectedly it somehow causes a registry entry to not be properly saved -- the next time you try to run the software after this happens you get the error as ECOTECT tries to load.

With the current v5.20 versions all you need to do to fix this is delete the 5.00 registry entry for ECOTECT at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Square One/Ecotect/5.00

To do this, click Start » Run in windows then type regedit in the run box that pops up and click OK.

Then you just need to navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Square One/Ecotect/

Then select the 5.00 folder, right click on it and choose delete.

Then if you then try and start ECOTECT it will start with the standard setup and should be able to get through the full process without an error.

With the next version of ECOTECT v5.50+ we will aim to rectify this problem, and will also provide a nicer way to clear the ECOTECT registry entries.
